How can you tell if your headlight is oxidized or how extensive the damage is?

The simplest way is to apply water (your wet finger will do).

  • If the surface does not change in clarity then you probably have very little u.v. oxidation damage.  But to be sure, read the next section on visual inspection.
  • If the surface suddenly appears very clear but dries cloudy then you have substantial oxidation.
  • If the surface does not become clear then you have a severely damaged u.v. layer (or none at all), restoration is the only cure.

Very close visual inspection.

  • Does the lens have any peeling?  Look closely and you can see splotches or jagged lines either at the top or the center of the lens.
  • Does the lens have 'crazing'?  This looks like the surface is broken into a very large number of small pieces.
  • Does the lens look really burnt?
